Date of article: 2007-10-11 | Hits: 711 | Rating: 0 | Permalink

October is Awareness Month and Constitution Hill is inviting doctors, researchers, nurses, Stoma survivors and anyone who is interested to learn more about Colostomy on Saturday, 13th 0ctober 2007 at the Old Fort Conference Room, Constitution Hill. This special programme will start at 10h00 and end at 14h00.

A stoma or colostomy is an artificially produced opening for the removal of waste from the body. This waste can be urinary or faecal in nature and is diverted from the normal passage through the body and brought to the surface of the abdomen via the stoma. A stoma is formed as treatment for a diseased or damaged gastro-intestinal or genito-urinary tract. All patients with a stoma are totally reliant on their appliances to lead a relatively normal life and it is therefore vital that the stoma is properly managed and the appliances are optimally used.

The seminar will be facilitated by Jane Hooler, a registered Nurse and qualified Mid-Wife and has a certificate as a Stomaltherapy Nurse. She worked for CANSA Association from 1979 ? December 1991as a Stomatherapist . She was employed by South African Stoma Therapy Association from 1991 of which 6 years she was the President of SASTA. She?s currently involved in training and clinical work in a Private Sector (and) concentrated at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre

Constitution Hill is a unique mixed-use development in the Inner City of Johannesburg implemented by the JDA, funded by Blue IQ and the new home of the Constitutional Court, the protector of our basic rights and freedoms. Constitution Hill is also the site of Johannesburg?s notorious Old Fort Prison Complex, commonly known as Number Four, where thousands of ordinary people were brutally punished before the dawn of democracy in 1994. Many of South Africa?s leading political activists, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, were detained here.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, interactive experiences and educational programmes , Constitution Hill offers venues for hire, as well as the Dome, the location for film shoot service, day and night tours, a full calendar of public programmes and exhibitions that bring the site to life and enable the public to connect with the activities of the Constitutional Court.
